The legend of Baba Marta

BABA MARTA

This is the holiday that we associate with spring and the festivity of martenitsi. The martenitsa is an ornament made of goats with the colors red and white.
The classic martenitsa is twisted red and white wool thread. Colors have a certain meaning: red-blood, life; white - purity and happiness.
It is a tradition on the first day of March for the oldest woman in the family to crochet a martenitsa for health, well-being and luck, against lessons. The twisted white and red thread is always crocheted on the left side of the chest. Martenits are worn until the appearance of a flowering tree or the sight of a stork, that is, the arrival of spring. Then it is placed on a tree or under a stone.
The holiday of Baba Marta in Bulgarian traditions is a symbol of spring and brings a wish for health and fertility at the beginning of the new cycle in nature. The first of March marks the arrival of Baba Marta and the approach of spring. The tradition is related to ancient pagan history from the Balkan Peninsula, related to all agricultural nature cults.
The legends and traditions associated with Baba Marta are numerous. According to one of them, she is the sister of Little and Big Sechko (the months of January and February) and is angry and angry because her two brothers  either they do some great mischief, or they always drink the wine and won't let her taste it. Another legend tells of a goatherd who led her flock to the mountains early in the morning despite her husband's warnings about the bad weather. She was convinced that Baba Marta would give her good weather, because she is a woman like her. The young woman's words angered and enraged the old woman. Not much time passed and black clouds hung over the mountain. The goatherd never returned to her home– тя и стадото ѝ замръзнали и се превърнали в купчина камъни, от които потекла лековита вода.
As you must have already noticed, all the stories are unanimous about the fierce and changeable mood of Baba Marta, which affects the weather. In the past, Bulgarians believed that when she laughed, it would be sunny and warm outside, but when she got angry, a strong wind blew and clouds obscured the sun. That is why a huge part of the traditions and customs related to this day and the month in general are dedicated to the propitiation of Baba Marta. The belief is that on the first of March she visits the people and the crops, wearing a red cloth, red stockings and a red headscarf. People believed that the old woman would only enter a neat and orderly house, and for this reason, at the end of February, families thoroughly cleaned their homes. This spring cleaning symbolized for them getting rid of everything bad, old and unnecessary, left over from last year. It was also common in the yard to move out  and spread a red tablecloth, sash or mat, because people thought that this would please Baba Marta and cause her favor towards the house and its inhabitants.
The old woman also had requirements regarding the people she would meet on the first of March. She didn't like to see old women and that's why they stayed at home so as not to anger her. On the other hand, the young girls and children enjoyed her favor and thanks to them the weather could be warm and sunny. Grandma Marta was extremely favorable to people who wore martenits, hence the centuries-old tradition of adorning ourselves with white and red threads on this day.
